hey, 47 years of the SJ Parade. If you are new to North Portland, its small town Americana in an urban neighborhood. If you have been around for a while, you undoubtedly have a favorite parade story. Starts at noon, from Lombard and Burr through the town center, and disbands at the community center. There is a street fair downtown till 6PM. Applaud the kids marching, hold your nose at the hotrods breaking the tires loose, heckle the politicians.. enjoy the zaniness.. its an annual ritual.

5 to 7PM at the St Johns McMennimens, 8203 N. Ivanhoe (across from the Safeway store..) We’re excited to announce the first in what we hope are many BikePortland Get Togethers. The first one is happening this Tuesday (2/3) in St. Johns (details below).

The idea behind these new events is simple. We want to meet up with you off-line and give you an opportunity to connect with your neighbors for a lively discussion about local bike issues.

Anyone who lives, works, commutes, or otherwise spends time in the neighborhood is invited to join us.

Each month we’ll hold one in a different part of the city and we’ll bring in folks who are involved in the local bike scene to help kickstart the conversation.

Do you have ideas about how to improve biking on the St. Johns Bridge? What is the status of on-street bike parking in downtown? What are the safe and family-friendly bike routes through the neighborhood? Is Weir’s Cyclery really the oldest bike shop in Portland? What does PBOT have planned for St. Johns? These, and all other topics are fair game for discussion.

anyways, I look forward to meeting any and all tribesters at this event.. and please do come help plan for North Portlands evolution into the MadMax postpetroleum future...

Briefly a 6 mile route of non-primary streets will be closed off to motor traffic, and a temporary 6 mile 'circular park' will be created. at various venues, ( Penninsula and Arbor Lodge parks, among others.) and other venues will be hosting a huge community event. ride your bike, walk, rollerblade, skateboards..anything human powered. check out the link and you will find that this is a seriously huge communtiy event, and even we sophisticated, erudite urbanites can appreciate its possibilities.

I must apologize for the confusion about the tea party's location. I was quite sad to learn that several people who had come looking for the Mad Artists' Tea Party & Picnic yesterday ended up instead at the main stage area of Cathedral Park, (where there was some music being DJed).

I did not know ahead of time about the other event, but I had foolishly hoped that the colorful chalk arrows we drew on the many paths around the park (along with the words "Follow Me" and "Drink Me" and pictures of tea cups) would still be sufficient to lead people to the actual Tea Party event's location.

I will admit that our group was smaller (and therefore less obvious) than I had hoped for, but we were the ones drinking tea amongst our art at the lower end of the park from noon until 4pm, near the beach and picnic tables.

I certainly agree that I should have been far more specific ahead of time as to exactly where the Tea Party and Picnic was located, but the presence of another, larger event in the park was entirely unexpected. Perhaps if that had not occurred on the same day then there would have been less potential for mistaken event confusion, and it would have been much easier for people to find us. :(

Anyhow, I sincerely hope that anyone who came looking for us and could not find us, or ended up at that other (non-tea-drinking) event by mistake might find it possible to forgive us for mistakes in the organization of our very first event. Please consider trying to join us again next year when we plan the next one.

In the past 10 years, these are some of the benefits that participants have repeatedly shared having received:

* More fulfilling relationships with family, friends, and co-workers
* Ease in connecting with others
* Greater ability to freely give and receive love
* Self-acceptance, self-confidence, and self-esteem
* Ability to release stress, fear, and anxiety
* Clarity and sense of purpose
* Community--many people have established lasting friendships with people they've met through the Heart of Now

What is The Heart of Now?

The essence of The Heart of Now is the practice of being present with your whole self: your emotions, your thoughts, your body, and, beyond that, the part of you that is connected to everyone and everything, and from which your dreams and visions spring. When you are present with yourself, you can be present with others and with the situations and circumstances of your life. In this place of presence, you are free from the limitations that have held you back, and all possibilities are available to you--you are free to create your life as you want it to be.

The Heart of Now will take place at Awakenings Wellness Center - 1016 SE
12th Avenue Portland, OR 97214 - (503) 922-2122.

We will begin on Saturday morning, May 12th, at 9:00 AM. Saturday and
Sunday evenings, space will be provided for socializing, but the formal
program should end by 8pm each night. We will complete by 4:00 PM on Monday.

The weekend includes organic vegetarian meals: you can arrive early for
a fruit and cereal breakfast. We will provide lunch, and dinner on
Saturday and Sunday, and lunch on Monday.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis with receipt of a
$100 registration fee. Enrollment is not guaranteed until we receive
your registration fee. Please call us at 541-345-8090 to make your payment via credit card. Checks may be made payable to "Heart of Now".

The course cost is offered by donation, with a suggested additional
contribution of $350-$750. You'll have an opportunity to make your
donation at the end of the course.

MONKEY NOIR brings together the PDX Burning Man families for a sexy and explosive evening of magical suspense in the tradition of early film noir movies. Our theme harkens back to the dark, muted tone of Orson Welles’ classic Touch of Evil and stylistic elements of urban corruption from John Hustons’s The Asphalt Jungle. That’s right, Doll Face. The dim moody lights and pulsing, nervous soundtrack have never before seemed so SMOKING HOT! Imaginative and unsettling, MONKEY NOIR will spark your illicit passions on a shadowy night of megalomania. It’s theater for your mind…

Thought I'd pass this along as it sure applys to my neighborhood in St Johns...

Time, Place, Manner
for
Liquor Licenses

Dear Constituents,

What seemed like an easy housekeeping bill, adjusting the time period and fees for the issuance of liquor licenses, dramatically changed on March 30th. House Bill 2056 was amended by the Business Labor and Consumer Affairs Committee, adding something good and something really bad.

On the bright side, the text from a bill Rep. Rosenbaum has been supporting on the senate side, SB357 was added to this bill. SB357 extends the comment period by 15 days for neighborhood associations on the issuance or renewal of liquor. The extra fifteen days would afford the neighborhood association
representatives better opportunity to notify members and work together in developing Good Neighbor Agreements with local businesses.

This is great, but not worth the trade off. The amendment also removed important aspects of the "Time, Place, Manner" regulations. HB 2056 now limits regulations to nuisances that occur on the licensed premise. What was removed was the right for cities and counties to adopt regulations regarding nuisances that originate from the licensed premise.

This may seem small to some yet larger to others, depending on the amount of time you and your neighborhood spend dealing with these nuisances. The "Time Place Manner" ordinance allows cities and counties to adjust business practices when a business has accrued a number of complaints. The change from originate to on is the difference between whether a patron of a bar or
tavern engages in a fight in the bar's parking lot vs. half a block down the street. With this legislative change, the establishment would be free from a complaint because their patron left the premise before engaging in the disorderly conduct.

We wanted to contact you about this legislative change, in order to notify those who will be most affected while you can still do something to stop it. In a changing area such as East and North Portland, we need to be careful about balancing the growing business community with the livability of surrounding neighborhoods. The current "Time Place Manner" ordinances allow cities to balance those concerns. Don't let special interests change the playing field. Please share your input with thecommittee members that will determine the fate of HB2056.

Sincerely,
Rep. Diane Rosenbaum
Rep. Gary Hansen

How to stop the bill, HB2056

Contact Legislators on the Ways and Means General Government Subcommittee:

hi no po family tribe!
ahoy!
i grew up in irvington(yes i know that is n.e.)and have lived in n &n.e. most of all.
amherst.hodge, hurst, lombard right behind st. johns honda. and now reside on monroe at vancouver.
love the hood.
always have,always will.
i'm always down for house parties.
i play pretty decent acoustic guitar and have a set of vintage funk records that will knock your socks off.
i would love to connect with any of you and broaden my no po family.
i even do work parties,so if you need help with something just let me know.for yard work parties the invitation must have sugar on top as i don't like yard work much after doing landscape maintenance for a year.
still ...
thanks for having this tribe.
best wishes,
wes
